Samuel
|
Through his dedication and our support, Samuel has won the National Amateur Boxing Federation Featherweight championships and represented Ghana at the Melbourne, Australia Commonwealth Games. |
When we met him, Samuel was 18 years old who lived with his unemployed mother but had to sell plastic bags on the streets to get some money for food. He did not know the whereabouts of his father.
He dropped out of school aged 10 because his mother could not pay the school fees. Having been outside the education system for such a long time and with very little literacy and numeracy skills, Samuel did not want to go back to school. His ambition instead was to become a boxer.
The Broom Street Children Project bought his boxing equipment and gear, paid for his training fees and continues to give him monthly food allowance so he can concentrate on developing his boxing career.
Samuel’s mother died on 31 December 2003 and he now sees the staff and volunteers working at The Broom Street Children Project as his family.
