Beyond the immediate need for food, clothing and medicine, most street children we talked to believe that it is only through education, practical training and means of generating an income that can create sustainable lives for them.
Education has been described as the ‘social vaccine’ and the UN and World Bank call it ‘the single effective weapon against poverty and HIV/AIDS’. The longer these children receive no education and learn no basic skills, the greater the risk of their succumbing to criminal activity, substance abuse and persistent dangers associated with poverty.

It is our quest to prevent the valuable resources of this country that these children represent from falling through the net. We are seeking support to satisfy the need for education and skills expressed by disadvantaged boys and girls sleeping on the streets of Accra. Our close association to this group and great understanding of their needs puts us in a unique position to help them adequately. |
| Our Life Enrichment Project will improve access to relevant primary education for the most disadvantaged boys and girls living in dangerous situations on Accra streets by finding schools for them and paying all associated costs. It will also enhance the basic skills and sustainable living by paying for apprenticeship training where this is identified and thereby enhancing the chances of street children acquiring skills and knowledge necessary to get jobs in future. However, access to education and training is unlikely to be successful unless there is access to a safe place to stay. This is why we are renovating an accommodation for 200 children and in addition building a new hostel to cater for a further 50 children. |
